GLOBIS-B represented at the European GEO workshop

During a 3 day workshop in Helsinki, organized by the European Commission to discuss and shape EuroGEOSS, the European contribution to GEOSS (Global Earth Observation System of Systems), GLOBIS-B presented the results of the three workshops that were organized by the project. The main focus of the presentation was directed to the data workflow process as designed by the first two workshops and detailed and improved during the third workshop.

The main aim of the presentation was to explain what GLOBIS-B is able to contribute to EuroGEOSS:

  • Agreement about harmonization of the data generation process among scientific experts and operators of biodiversity and ecosystems research infrastructures
  • Provide criteria to evaluate whether datasets can be used as Essential Biodiversity Variables (EBVs), both inside and outside the realm of GEOSS
  • Agree on workflow development to transfer raw data into EBV data products
  • Present a roadmap to achieve all this on a global scale

The overarching goal of this is to serve GEO BON in its efforts to develop EBVs and a harmonized biodiversity monitoring system which both will serve as a basis to calculate indicators of biodiversity change, thus contributing to the sustainable development goals (SDGs) and the Aichi Targets as defined by the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD)
